Dr. Shyam Visweswaran, a professor with the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) and Intelligent Systems Program, has been appointed interim chair of the DBMI.
“In the new era of generative AI, Dr. Visweswaran’s goal is to cement the department’s position as a national leader in biomedical AI by developing trustworthy and transparent applications that connect biomedical discovery to clinical practice and by training the next generation of physician–scientists and informaticists to harness AI with integrity and compassion,” Dr. Anantha Shekhar, the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine, wrote in an email announcement to faculty and staff within Pitt’s six schools of health sciences.
Dr. Michael J. Becich, Distinguished Professor and current chair of the department, will be stepping down as chair effective Nov. 1. He will continue as a Distinguished Professor and senior advisor to Dr. Shekhar and Dr. Visweswaran in addition to returning to research and mentoring.
