Professor He is interested in, and actively working on, various sub-topics areas of Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing, which include adaptive and interactive information retrieval, text extraction and generation, and seeking and managing of information and data on the Web. The goal of Prof. He's research is to develop effective, efficient and friendly tools for people to access large, distributed, and heterogeneous information collections.

Proessor He has a secondary academic affiliation with the Intelligent Systems Program, an interdisciplinary academic unit focusing on research and education on Artificial Intelligence. He is the director of a research lab called Information Retrieval, Integration and Synthesis. He was the chair of SIS Council, the governing body for the iSchool, between 2012 and 2014. He currently serves on the editorial board of SCI/SSCI indexed journals “Information Processing and Management”, “Internet Research” and “Aslib Journal of Information Management”.
